ST. PAUL, Minn. – This Saturday, December 4th at noon at Memorial Stadium in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Concordia University football team (8-3, 7-3 NSIC) will face Pittsburg State (5-6, 3-6 MIAA) in the 45th-annual Mineral Water Bowl hosted by the Excelsior Springs Quarterback Club. It’s one of two NCAA Division II-sanctioned bowl games and a chance for the Concordia Golden Bears to win their first-ever postseason football game and become the fourth team in school history to achieve a 9-win season. The Gorillas of Pitt State will be looking to even their season record at .500.
Concordia carries the NCAA’s fifth-longest active road winning streak in Division II football to Excelsior Springs, located just north of the Kansas City area. The game is considered a neutral site and will not jeopardize CU’s 7-game road winning streak. The bowl appearance is Concordia’s third in the 11th-year of the NSIC’s membership with the bowl, more than any other NSIC member. The NSIC carries a 2-8 record all-time at the Mineral Water Bowl, with Concordia holding an 0-2 record, dropping the 2003 and 2005 games to Missouri Western State who has appeared in the game five times. The Golden Bears are 0-3 all-time against the MIAA, adding a 2007 road loss to the University of Central Missouri.
Concordia tied a school record by posting a five-win turnaround from their 2009 season that finished with a 3-8 record.
