ESU Places Eighth at 2010 PSAC Wrestling Championships

BLOOMSBURG – Redshirt junior Adam Hluschak (141) and redshirt sophomore Brock Parker (157) both finished fourth in their weight classes for East Stroudsburg University at the 2010 PSAC Wrestling Championships, which were contested on Saturday at Bucknell’s Nelson Field House.

ESU finished eighth in the field of 10 schools, posting 48 points. Clarion had three individual champions and nine wrestlers in the top four of their weight classes to end Edinboro’s five-year reign as the team champion. Bloomsburg was second, followed by Edinboro and Lock Haven.

Hluschak and Parker were both the top seeds at their weights but were knocked off in the semifinals. Hluschak dropped a 7-4 decision to No. 4 seed and eventual champion Derek Shingara of Bloomsburg, and Parker suffered a 2-1 decision to No. 4 Johnny Greisheimer of Edinboro. Hluschak came back with a 6-2 decision over Justin Loudon (Lock Haven) but was pinned early in the second period by No. 3 Mike Greck (Millersville) in the consolation finals.

Parker was the defending PSAC champion at 149, which he won while wrestling for Lock Haven, and made his debut on the mat for the Warriors on Saturday. He finished the day with a 2-2 record with all four matches decided by a single point. Last year, he knocked off the No. 1, 3 and 4 seeded wrestlers with all three matches going beyond regulation. Parker’s consolation final with No. 3 Frank Hickman (Bloomsburg) was decided by a 5-4 score.

Redshirt junior Ed Ebewo (197) reached the semifinals for the second straight year after wrestling at 184 last season. He won his first two matches by major decision, including a 12-3 score over No. 6 Tyler Zittle (Shippensburg), before being pinned in the third period by No. 2 Shawn Fendone (Edinboro) in the semis.

Redshirt senior Jeff Jacobs (174) wrestled a team-high five matches for the Warriors, ultimately placing sixth in his weight class. He had two straight first-period pins in the consolations after his bid for the semifinals ended against No. 5 Scott Joseph (Clarion), 2-1 in the first tiebreaker period. He suffered a third-period pin against No. 3 Michael Khoury (Lock Haven), then was on the short end of a 6-5 decision with Chris Hrunka (Edinboro) in the fifth-sixth place match.

Redshirt freshman Brendan McKeown was the Warriors fifth place-winner, taking the No. 5 spot in the 184-pound bracket in his first career PSAC Championships. McKeown pinned Jason Foor (Millersville) in 5:33 in his final match of the day in the consolations and took his two losses against the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.

Freshman Jordan Toledo of Pleasant Valley made his debut for the Warriors and went 2-2 on the mat. Two other Warriors also picked up wins – senior Jesse Dunn had a 5-4 decision over John Linguist (Shippensburg) in his first match of the day, and sophomore Will Weaver had a 7-4 decision over No. 8 Justin Grant (Kutztown).
