Dominican 53, Cal State East Bay 46

ARCATA, Calif. — On Saturday, the Dominican University of California women's basketball team notched a 53-46 win over CCAA opponent Cal State East Bay on the opening day of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge hosted by Humboldt State.

Senior guard Kelsey Janusch led Dominican (2-6) to their second victory of the season with a season-high 23 points. She went 6-of-12 (.500) from the field, including a stellar 4-of-5 (.800) night from behind the three point line.

The Pioneers (0-7) scored first but Dominican otherwise held Cal State East Bay scoreless through the first eight minutes of play, building a 12-2 lead. The lead reached 14 points on a pair of free throws by freshman forward Mary Kate Jankowski and the Lady Penguins went into halftime with a comfortable 26-13 lead.

Dominican saw its halftime lead trimmed to two with 10:45 to play but sophomore forwardMelissa Wise nailed a three-pointer to keep the Lady Penguins ahead by five. A layup by senior forward Shawna Bryant pushed the lead back to 13 with 3:35 to play before the Pioneers trimmed the final tally to 53-46.

Fellow starters junior guard Taki Te Koi and Bryant both notched double digits in the victory, going for 12 points and 10 points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting, respectively. Wise added six points in the victory. Bryant and senior center Raquel Gomes were tied for the game high with nine rebounds apiece.

The Lady Penguins offset 22 turnovers by dominating the boards, snatching 47 compared to the Pioneers' 34.

Claudia Nelson led the Pioneers with 13 points.

Dominican plays host Humboldt State on Sunday in the second and final day of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m
