Defense leads Warriors to OT win

TURLOCK – The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team's defense led the Warriors to a 78-74 overtime win over the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest Friday night.

Katie Busi led the Warriors with 20 points for her third 20-point game this season, and with her 11 rebounds, picked up her 25th career double-double. Andreanna Marshall contributed with a career-high 17 points night on 8 of 16 shooting while Christin Gowan added 10 points and four assists.

The Warriors have now improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA, handing Sonoma State its first loss of the season.  Sonoma State is now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The win can largely be credited to the Warrior's defense as they recorded 15 steals while applying a lot of pressure at halfcourt. Three different players -- Jeanette Rowe, Marshall and Busi -- each had three steals.

"I am really proud of the team and the way we played defense tonight," head coach Sharon Turner said. "Our defense is predicated on ball pressure and we did a good job with that."

That defensive pressure led to 30 Sonoma State turnovers.

Aly Hennington led Sonoma State with her career 21 points and Aly Conway added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Seawolves.

In the first half of play, both the Warriors and Seawolves were closely matched as neither team led by more than four points.  Sonoma State took the lead early in the first half preventing until the Warriors took over in the final minutes of play.

The Seawolves' offense came out strong in the second half taking the lead after just five minutes.  Sonoma State used an 18-0 run during a seven-plus minute stretch that swung a seven-point Warrior lead into a seven-point Sonoma advantage. Busi finally ended the SSU spurt a pair of free throws at 10:34 left to play.

Stanislaus then used a 5-0 run to stay in the game and took over the momentum with back to back steals at mid-court that turned into two Marshall buckets to give the Warriors a 68-66 lead with 2:18 left in regulation play.

Two SSU free throws were the only scoring in the game's final two minutes to send the contest into overtime.

Despite losing their two leading scorers Marshall and Busi by fouling out, the Warriors kept control of the game and out-scoring the Seawolves 10-4.

"I am extremely proud of my team, especially after two of our seniors fouling out.  They showed a lot of character and this a huge win for us," said Turner.

The Warriors hope this will create the momentum it needs as they host Humboldt State Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. HSU lost at Chico State, 64-62,
