Arkansas Tech Women’s Basketball advances one spot to fifth in USA Today/ESPN WBCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech Women’s Basketball advanced one spot to fifth in this week’s third regular season USA Today/ESPN WBCA Division II Coaches’ Poll that was released on Tuesday.

Tech, who was ranked sixth in last week’s second regular season poll, earned 552 points to stand 20 points in front of No. 6 Clayton State (9-0) and 65 points behind No. 4 Washburn (6-0). The Golden Suns have now been ranked for 17 consecutive weeks in the WBCA Coaches’ Poll, including being ranked in the Top 10 for 13 straight weeks dating to last season.

The USA Today/ESPN WBCA Coaches’ Poll is voted on weekly by a panel of 30 head coaches at NCAA Division II institutions and all the coaches are members of the WBCA (Women’s Basketball Coaches Association). This season, Tech Head Coach Dave Wilbers will once again serve as a voter in the poll.

Tech, who moved up one spot in this week’s poll after picking up an 80-57 home win on Saturday over St. Edward’s, is one of three GSC teams mentioned in this week’s rankings as Delta State (7-0) remains at No. 1 for the second straight week, while Henderson State (7-2) earned eight votes to be 19th among the 36 schools receiving votes this week.

Delta State earned 711 points and 21 out of a possible 29 first place votes to sit atop the poll for the second straight week and the Lady Statesmen are followed by Lander (8-0), who earned 694 points and six first place votes, at No. 2 and Fort Lewis (7-0) remains at No. 3 as the Skyhawks earned 641 points and the final two first place votes. Washburn is at No. 4 and Tech rounds out the Top 5 of this week’s rankings.

The next five in the poll begins with Clayton State at No. 6 and they are followed by Northeastern State (5-0) at No. 7 and Emporia State (5-1) jumps two spots to No. 8. Grand Valley State (6-0) jumps five spots to No. 9 and Franklin Pierce (7-1) falls three spots to No. 10 this week.

Millersville [PA] (4-0) leaps five spots to No. 11 and they are followed by Alaska-Anchorage (6-2) at No. 12 and Wayne State [NE] (5-1) advances five spots to No. 13. Western Washington (5-0) jumps six spots to No. 14, while Michigan Tech (4-1) jumps five spots to No. 15 and Holy Family (4-2) falls eight spots to No. 16 this week. Cal State-Chico (6-0) moves up four spots to No. 17, while Indianapolis (4-2) is at No. 18 and Augustana (8-1) and Rollins [FL] (8-0) are tied at No. 19. Rollins is one of three newcomers in this week’s poll.

Grand Canyon (8-1), who is another of the newcomer teams this week, is at No. 21 and they are followed by Gannon [PA] (3-1) at No. 22 and West Texas A&M (3-2), who faces the Golden Suns at Tucker Coliseum on Dec. 29, falls 11 spots to No. 23 this week. Pace [NY] (8-0) is the third newcomer in this week’s poll as they are at no. 24 and California [PA] (4-1) drops one spot to No. 25 to round out this week’s rankings.

Tech returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 11 as the Golden Suns travel to Jackson, Tenn., for a 2 p.m. contest at Lambuth University (1-5 on the season). Tech collected a 107-60 win over the Lady Eagles in Russellville on Nov. 20.
