Women’s Basketball Falls At Valparaiso 64-44

Flyers fall in season opening exhibition

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Lewis women’s basketball team dropped a 64-44 decision at Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon in an exhibition contest. Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) led Lewis with 13 points, seven rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

Lewis jumped out to a quick 8-1 advantage. Valpo didn’t take their first lead of the contest until 16-15 on a layup by Laura Richards at 10:21. The Flyers went cold down the stretch of the first half, scoring just four points over the final five minutes.

Valpo took control of the game by outscoring Lewis 11-2 over the first 9:36 of the second half. A 3-pointer by Valpo’s Liz Horton made it a 47-29 game with under nine minutes remaining. The Crusaders cruised from there.

The Flyers offensive attack was hampered by 17 turnovers however Lewis forced 20 Valpo turnovers. Lewis shot just 22.6-percent (14-of-62) from the floor. Valpo held a 23 to 17 edge in offensive rebounds and 56-44 overall advantage in rebounds.

“We weren’t very tough and we have to be tougher,” head coach Lisa Carlsen said. “They got after the basketball better than we did. We didn’t shoot the ball well, but our intensity on the defensive end didn’t make up for it.”

Junior Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) added seven points for Lewis.

Tabitha Gerardot and Laura Richards each had 14 points for Valpo.

Lewis plays their final exhibition of the 2010-11 season on Monday at Western Michigan. Start time is 6:00 p.m. CT.
