Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men’s basketball team hosts the 2010 OrthoCarolina Classic Friday and Saturday in Cuddy Arena on the Wingate campus. Wingate will face Coker College at 4 p.m. Friday. Francis Marion University and Shaw University open the event at 2 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the consolation game is slated for 2 p.m. with the championship contest to follow at 4 p.m.
Wingate (1-2 overall) enters the 2010 OrthoCarolina Classic with three double figure scorers. Sophomore forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore guard Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) share the team lead with 13 points per game. Turner is averaging a double-double with his 11 rebounds per game. Classmate Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) is contributing 11.3 points per game.
In 2010, Turner was the South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year. He led the Bulldogs with 12.1 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game last season. Wingate was the only team in the SAC with five double-figure scorers. Junior guard Jaime Vaughn (Tallahassee, Fla.) contributed 11.7 points per game last year, while Matilus (11.6) and Alexander (10.7) also averaged double digits. Graduated guard Larry Staley (11.0) was Wingate’s fifth double-figure scorer.
In the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Tip-Off Classic last weekend in Hickory, Wingate defeated Queens University of Charlotte 69-66 Friday. Limestone College outlasted Wingate 78-64 Saturday. In the Queens contest, Turner had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Turner has five career double-doubles. Wingate is 4-1 overall when Turner posts a double-double.
Coker (1-2 overall) has a 101-83 victory over Morris College this season. Most recently, the Cobras dropped a 72-65 decision to UNC Pembroke at the Francis Marion University Zaxby’s Tip-off Clazzic Saturday. Senior guard Tom Wright (Sydney, Australia) led Coker with 22 points in the UNC Pembroke contest. Senior forward Liam Kyle (Cleveland, Ohio) leads the Cobras with 21.7 points per game. He tied a school record with 40 points against Morris on Nov. 17.
Francis Marion (4-0 overall) owns a victory over Coker (86-69, Friday, Nov. 19) in the aforementioned Zaxby’s Tip-off Clazzic. Most recently, FMU defeated Morris 116-60 Tuesday night in Florence. Patriot junior forward Liki Turner (Richmond, Va.) is the reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week. Turner had 24 points and 13 rebounds in a 94-91 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian College Saturday. The Patriots have played four home games; the Shaw contest is Francis Marion’s first game away from the friendly confines of the Smith University Center.
Shaw (1-0 overall) defeated Mars Hill College 77-73 on Nov. 12. Senior guard Raheem Smith (Greenville, N.C.) had 26 points in the Bears’ home victory over the MHC Lions. Junior guard Tony Smith (Greenville, N.C.) had 12 points and six assists, while junior center Jaylon Battle (Macon, Ga.) contributed 10 markers. Shaw head coach Cleo Hill, Jr. is the son of Winston-Salem State University all-star and NBA draft pick Cleo Hill, Sr.
