Lady Penguins Celebrate Thanksgiving with Victory Over Alaska-Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The Dominican University of California women’s basketball team celebrated Thanksgiving with a 57-47 victory over host Alaska-Fairbanks on the opening night of the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational.

Dominican (1-4) controlled the tempo early on, establishing a 7-2 lead before Alaska-Fairbanks (0-3) took a 14-13 lead with 7:29 to go in the first half. Dominican took the lead and  the Nanooks took it right back on a pair of Nicole Pingayak free throws. Freshman forward Mary Kate Jankowski tied it up with 2:50 left in the first half and sophomore forward Melissa Wise made the second of two free throws to send Dominican into the locker room with a 19-18 halftime lead.

The Nanooks opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 28-22 lead. The Lady Penguins fought back and took the lead for good though on a jumper by Wise with 7:35 left on the clock. Free throws helped Dominican build the lead to as large as 13 in the final minutes.

Senior Guard Kelsey Janusch, coming off back-to-back weeks appearing on the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll, continued her consistent play and led all players with 20 points. Wise had her best offensive output of the young season with 11 points and was one of four Lady Penguins to pull down four rebounds. Senior center Raquel Gomes added nine points and junior guard Taki Te Koi added eight points.

Alaska-Fairbnaks was led by a pair of junior guards. Autumn Greene scored 17 points and Whitney Anderson added 11 points in the loss. Senior Jessica Harrision led all players with eight rebounds.

The Nanooks shot a better percentage, going 16-of-48 (.333) from the field, than the Lady Penguins, who shot just 19-of-59 (.322). The Lady Penguins put up more shots though and made 6-of-20 (.300) shots from deep to edge Alaska-Fairbanks. Dominican also limited its turnovers, committing 21 while causing 27.

Dominican will look to build upon its momentum on Friday, November 26 when the Lady Penguins face Fort Lewis College (Durango, Colo.) in the second day of the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:15/6:16 p.m. Pacific.
