FERGUSON THROWS FOUR SCORELESS OUT OF THE PEN AGAINST TWINS, SWINGLE CLUBS TWO-RUN HOME RUN
BOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic -- Sophomore shortstop Dan Kemp (Sturbridge, Mass.) hit 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, drove in a run and scored another, and sophomore right-hander Joe Flynn (Plymouth, Mass.) struck out five over five innings on Thursday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University baseball team to a pair of victories during its first full day in the Dominican Republic.
The Ravens picked up a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles' Dominican academy, as well as a 4-2 win over the affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.
Against the Orioles, Kemp had the only two extra-base hits, while senior left fielder Eric Pearson (Webster, N.H.) had a pair of hits as well. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Thompson (Fort McMurray, Alberta) tossed six shutout innings, allowed only two hits and struck out five. Sophomore center fielder Nick LaCroix (Grafton, Mass.) and freshman third baseman Josh Rouse (Milfrod, Conn.) each drove in a run, too.
Against the Twins, sophomore left fielder Eric Romano (North Branford, Conn.) went 2-for-3, drew two walks, drove in a run and scored once. Freshman catcher Steve Swingle (Munsonville, N.H.) had the big blow with a two-run home run in the first inning. Freshman designated hitter Dan Ubele (Tyngsboro, Mass.) drove in a run as well.
After the games, the team enjoyed some time on the beach before a team lasagna dinner back at the hotel. Tomorrow, the Ravens have a pair of games: one against the Kansas City Royals' Dominican affiliate and one against a group of professional players from San Pedro.
