Wingate hosts Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center Saturday and Sunday

Charlotte, N.C.----Over 250 collegiate swimmers and divers will arrive in Charlotte this weekend to participate in the Fall Frenzy Invitational, hosted by Wingate University at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.

The MCAC plays host to a wide variety of swimming championships, including the Charlotte Ultra Swim, but this weekend colleges and universities from around the Southeast will put their Fall training on the line at a three-session invitational, starting Saturday at 10 a.m. Session two will be contested at 6 p.m. pm Saturday, with the final session Sunday at 11 a.m. General admission tickets will be on sale at the door.

Both Wingate men’s and women’s teams won the invitational in 2009; the Bulldogs will face a difficult task repeating against the competition slated to participate in the 2010 Frenzy. Wingate will face NCAA Division I College of Charleston, along with Division II rivals Mars Hill College, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Catawba College, Converse College, Limestone College, Pfeiffer University and Queens University of Charlotte. NAIA power the Savannah College of Art and Design rounds out the 10-school field.

In Wingate’s last appearance at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, the Bulldogs hosted a quad meet Nov. 5-6. The Bulldog women’s swimming and diving team swept the quad meet with Catawba, Queens and SCAD-Savannah. The Bulldog men’s swimming team defeated Catawba and Queens and dropped a heart-breaking decision to SCAD-Savannah.

Wingate head coach Kirk Sanocki has built the Bulldogs into a national contender. In February, the Wingate men won their third consecutive BGMC championship meet title. The Bulldog women placed third in a very tight race. In March, the Wingate men finished sixth at the NCAA Division II national championship meet in Canton, Ohio. The Bulldogs notched their second consecutive sixth-place showing. The Wingate women also competed in the 2010 national meet, placing 23rd. An astounding 17 Bulldogs (12 men, five women) earned All-American honors in 2010.
