Sonoma State Wins 2010 CCAA Men's Soccer Tournament Title

TURLOCK, Calif. – Junior forward Cam Vickers’ goal less than two minutes into the second half proved to be the decisive goal as Sonoma State defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, on Sunday to capture the 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Soccer Championship at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.

The Seawolves (14-5-1) captured their third CCAA Tournament title and second in the last three years. Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills (14-5-2) will await the selection of the 32-team NCAA Tournament field that will be announced on Monday.

Sunday’s championship match marked the sixth time since 2000 that the Seawolves and Toros have met in the finals of the CCAA Tournament and the record between the two programs is 3-3.

After a scoreless first half, Sonoma State took advantage of the initial scoring opportunity following the intermission. The eventual winning goal was set up by an opportunistic Vickers, who collected the ball following a missed shot by Trevor Hurst, found an opening and shot the ball passed Cal State Dominguez Hills’ goalkeeper Markus Dickerson.

Sonoma State won despite being out-shot 19-6 by the Toros. However, the Seawolves held a 3-2 edge in shots-on-goal.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had chances late in the contest to tie the match, but Sonoma State defender Ryan Hall made a key defensive play in the box and the Toros had a shot hit the post.
