Wingate ends Catawba's season with 1-0 win in SAC Tourney

WINGATE, NC -- Wingate sophomore Izabella Miranda (Plymouth, MA) scored late in the first half to lift the Bulldogs to a 1-0 win over visiting Catawba in the first round of the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament on Tuesday night at the WU Soccer Complex. The third-seeded Bulldogs improve to 12-2-3 and advance to take on seventh-seeded Tusculum in a Friday semifinal. The Catawba Indians, seeded-sixth, end their season at 7-8-3.

Miranda scored the lone goal of the match at the 36:24 mark in the first half. The Bulldogs were awarded a free kick five yards outside the box, and Miranda lined one in that hit the cross and went into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season. She had a similar opportunity moments earlier, firing a shot from the same distance, but it hit the crossbar directly and did not bounce in.

Wingate outshot Catawba 13-3 on the night, while holding a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Andrea Dunshie (Apex, NC/SE Raleigh HS) had two of those shots for the Lady Indians. Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA) stopped all three shots to post the shutout. Catawba’s Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) made five saves.
