WEST FLORIDA MEN'S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES: 11/18 @ Alaska Invitational

News & Notes

ARGOS IN ALASKA
After the West Florida women’s basketball team traveled to Fairbanks, Alaska last November, this year it’s the men’s team’s turn.  The Argos will face Arkansas-Fort Smith, King and host school Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Invitational on Nov. 18-20.

NEW STARTING FIVE
For the first time in over 10 years, the starting lineup in the season opener included five players that did not play for UWF the previous season.  In last Friday’s game at UCF, Darryl McGhee was the only returner in the starting five, but he sat out 2009-10 as a redshirt.  The other four starters for Stinnett were guards Mike Lewis and Anthony Sims and forwards Terrance Beasley and Jamar Moore.

ARGOS PICKED 4TH IN GSC EAST
Despite the turnover, West Florida was picked 4th out of six teams in the Gulf South Conference East Division Preseason Coaches Poll. Stinnett turned over almost the entire roster, and UWF was picked ahead of West Georgia and West Alabama by the East’s six head coaches.

LEWIS FOR THREE!!!
Junior transfer Mike Lewis hit 5-of-9 three-pointers in his UWF debut at UCF, accounting for all 15 of his points.  Only one player last year had five three-pointers in a game: Max Hoggard against Alabama-Huntsville on 2/6/10.

TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
Turnovers were an issue for West Florida at UCF, but not for guard Anthony Sims.  The junior transfer from Faulkner State Community College led the team with four assists, and he did not turn the ball over in 30 minutes of play.

McGHEE EARNS ALL-GSC NOD
Returning senior forward Darryl McGhee is a large part of the reason why UWF is picked 4th in this season’s GSC East race. McGhee sat out 2009-10 with an injury but is healthy again and representing the Argonauts on the 2010-11 Preseason East Division All-Conference team.

FAULKNER STATE CONNECTION
Coach Stinnett is importing three transfers from Faulkner State Community College this season, and each one should play a big role for the Argos. Jamar Moore scored a team-high 18.3 points while pulling down 8.3 rpg per game last season for Faulkner State, leading the team to a 22-9 record. He topped the 30-point plateau two different times as a sophomore. Moore’s FSCC teammates, Jamel Brazeal and Anthony Sims, averaged 10.5 and 10.4 ppg respectively, with Brazeal knocking down nearly 38% of his three-point field goal attempts.

Argonaut Assistant Coach Wade Anderson coached at Faulkner State from 2005-2007, and GA Kenny Holmes played there as well, from 2004-06.

DIVISION I TALENT
The Argonauts welcome two transfers from NCAA Division I programs to Pensacola. Terrance Beasley played for Stinnett at Pensacola High School as a senior before heading to Tulane last season. He averaged 1.8 ppg in 25 appearances last season, with a high of nine-points against Marshall.

Mike Lewis, meanwhile, played two seasons at Eastern Kentucky, including participating in the College Basketball Invitational postseason tournament last year. Lewis played 42 games for the Colonels, and he earned Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week honors after contributing 11 points against BIG EAST opponent Cincinnati on December 20, 2008.

UP NEXT: UM COCA-COLA CLASSIC
After making the long trip home from Alaska, UWF will travel to Montevallo on Nov. 26-27 to play in the Coca-Cola Classic.  The Argos will be facing two teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year: Georgia College & State and host school Montevallo.
