UMass Lowell Volleyball Falls at Pace, 3-0, Drops NE-10 Tournament Opener

UMass Lowell stumbles in NE-10 Tournament opener, falls in three at Pace

LOWELL, MA (Nov. 8, 2010) – The defending Northeast-10 Volleyball Tournament Champions couldn’t conjure up the magic for the second consecutive season, falling in three sets at second-seed Pace University on Tuesday night.

The seventh-seeded River Hawks finish the 2010 season at 15-12 overall while the Setters improves to 21-9 as they continue onto the semifinals.

UMass Lowell was slow out of the gates and had to rebound from a 1-5 start, trading blows with Pace in a back-and-forth first set. The lead changed hands numerous times until the Setters seized control with the score tied 19-19. Pace reeled off four straight points, forcing two River Hawk timeouts, and ultimately took the set 22-25.

Senior Jillian Hadder (Yucaipa, Calif.) picked up a team-best four kills in the opening frame, while Vicky Wong (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) dug eight and seven balls, respectively.

The second set kept the same pace of play with the Setters slowly building a lead on UMass Lowell. The River Hawks were forced to call timeout at 14-22 and followed with small comeback. Pace quickly got back into rhythm and grabbed a 16-25 victory.

Sarah Coscia (Pittsfield, Mass.) landed four of UMass Lowell’s 10 kills and Eddy picked up six more digs.

The Setters delivered more of the same in the third set, putting the River Hawks behind 1-5 at the start. UMass Lowell rebounded to pull the score to 13-14 by the midpoint behind a series of kills by Coscia. The River Hawks continued to battle, pushing the third set to the brink and forcing Pace to call timeout at 23-23. The battle raged into extra points before the Setters clinched the match with a 29-31 victory.
Coscia picked up six more kills in the finale, while Eddy and Wong tallied nine and seven digs, respectively.

For the match, Coscia led the way with a team-high 12 digs. Hadder and Lea Freeman (Methuen, Mass.) were close behind with eight kills each.

The reigning NE-10 Libero of the Week, Eddy, was sensational in the backcourt, registering a match-high 22 digs. Wong also provided support with 15 digs and seven kills.

Setter Kristina Wiltjer (San Diego, Calif.) distributed well with 32 assists and nine digs.
