The Lewis women’s basketball team hosts Upper Iowa on Monday at 7 p.m. The contest is the home opener for Lewis. The game will be broadcast on WJOL 1340 AM. LewisFlyers.com will feature a link to the broadcast, video provided by America One and live stats.
LAST TIME OUT: Lewis dropped their season opener on Friday at Saginaw Valley State 75-70. Jenny Turpel finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Lory Shaw totaled 16 points and 12 rebounds. She connected on 8-of-10 free throws. Kady Currin added 13 points, seven boards and four assists. Saginaw Valley led 26-15 with nine minutes left in the opening half when Lewis went on a 20-1 run to take a 35-27 lead with 5:22 remaining in the half. Madeline Kish had a 3-pointer to cap the rally. Lewis led by five at the half and led for the majority of the second half until Saginaw Valley took their first lead of the second half with 3:29 remaining on a Marah Kyle layup. The Flyers never led again.
SHAW TIME: Lory Shaw set career highs in points (16), rebounds (12), made free throws (8) and free throws attempted (10) at Upper Iowa. She also added three steals, which tied her career high.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE: Turpel’s double-double on Friday was the 18th of her career. She had 11 last season.
SERIES HISTORY VS. UIU: The only other meeting between Lewis and Upper Iowa came last season. The Peacocks defeated the Flyers 73-71. Upper Iowa’s Kenya Howard made a jumper with five seconds remaining to give the Peacocks the victory.
FOR HOME OPENERS: Lewis is 1-2 in home openers under head coach Lisa Carlsen.
FOR STARTERS: Lewis’ expected starting five (Currin, Monaco, Murdock, Carbaugh, Turpel) has 263 combined starts.
NATIONAL SCHEDULE: Four of Lewis’ opponents were ranked in the preseason Top 25 Poll: Tusculum (#4), Indianapolis (#10), Drury (#16), Grand Valley State (#23).
PICKED FOR SECOND: Lewis was picked to finish second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference North Division, earning 52 points and two first place votes. UW-Parkside was picked to finish first in the division. The Rangers earned 65 points and 13 first place votes.
DON’T PLAN A VACATION IN JANUARY: Of Lewis’ nine home GLVC games this season, seven are in the month of January. The schedule includes a four games in eight days stretch on Jan. 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th.
NO OT NEEDED: Lewis didn’t play a single overtime game last season.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, LAKESHORE: Lewis will play two games on Lakeshore Public Television this season. The first contest will be on Saturday, Jan. 8 against Quincy at 5:30. The second will be on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 against Drury. Lewis defeated Missouri-St. Louis at Southern Indiana on Lakeshore last season.
THEY CALL HER MONEY: Kelly Monaco, known as Money to her teammates, ranks sixth all-time in career 3-pointers with 137. She needs 13 to pass Darcee Schmidt (2003-07) for fifth place.
TURPEL’S HONORS: Jenny Turpel was named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference First Team last year. In 2008-09 Turpel earned All-GLVC Second Team accolades. In addition to her All-GLVC honors, Turpel also earned Daktronics All-Midwest Region First Team honors last year. In 2008-09 she earned Second Team accolades.
IT’S SHAW GOOD: Over the final 11 games last season Lory Shaw averaged 6.9 points and 5.7 rebounds in 17.9 minutes off the bench. Shaw continued to look good in the exhibition season. She had nine points and six rebounds in 20 minutes at Western Michigan.
JT’s SEASON POINTS: Jenny Turpel scored 530 points last season, her second consecutive 500-point season. Only 13 times in school history has a player scored 500 points in a season.
JT’s CAREER POINTS: Jenny Turpel’s 1,383 points ranks 7th all-time in Lewis history. Another 500-point season would put her 2nd all-time in Lewis history. First up though is 6th place Mary Niego, who totaled 1,563 from 1980-83.
JT’s CAREER BLOCKS: Jenny Turpel’s 90 blocks ranks fifth all-time in Lewis history. She is five short of passing Jackie Wayne (1987-91) for fourth place. For her career, Turpel is averaging exactly one block a game.
AT HOME: Monday’s contest against Upper Iowa is the first of three games at home for Lewis. The Flyers play Wayne State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Ferris State at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23.
