Tusculum hosts Pioneer Classic this weekend

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College men’s basketball team will be hosting the 2010 Pioneer Classic this weekend at Pioneer Arena.  Joining the Pioneers this weekend are NCAA Division II programs Carson-Newman College, Georgia College and Hillsdale College.

The action begins on Friday when Carson-Newman and Georgia College open the Classic at 5 p.m., followed by Tusculum and Hillsdale at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s schedule starts at 2 p.m. when Carson-Newman faces off against Hillsdale, while Tusculum and Georgia College close out the weekend’s schedule at 4 p.m.

The Pioneers (1-2) are coming off Monday’s 70-44 win over Hiwassee College.  Tusculum had five players score in double figures, including junior center Tommy Klempin, who posted his first career double-double with career highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Monday’s victory was also the 398th career win for Tusculum head coach Jim Boone.

The Carson-Newman (0-1) program is under the direction of Chuck Benson, who in his fifth year at Mossy Creek, but first season as head coach.  The Eagles return four lettermen from last year’s 11-18 squad.
                                                                                                                                                  
Georgia College (1-0) opened its season on Wednesday with a 59-47 home win over Carver Bible College.  Like Boone, GC skipper Terry Sellers is also closing in on some coaching milestones.  Sellers enters this weekend with 299 wins on the GC sidelines and 497 victories overall.  The Bobcats went 22-6 last year and won the Peach Belt Conference Western Division, while advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Hillsdale (2-0) will be making the 511-mile trek from Michigan for its inaugural trip to Greeneville.  The Chargers return seven of their top eight players from last year’s 16-13 squad.  After starting the season 1-10, Hillsdale won 15 of its last 18 contests and advanced to the championship game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
