BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Gannon men’s wrestling team finished fifth at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships Saturday at Bloomsburg.
Clarion (135.5) took home top honors followed by Bloomsburg (110.5), Edinboro (109) and Lock Haven (93). Gannon (54.4) finished just ahead of Millersville (53.5) and Mercyhurst (52.5).
Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa. / DuBois Area) earned the Golden Knights best finish in the tournament with second-place honors in the 149-pound division. Swope opened the tournament with an 8-3 decision over Bloomsburg’s Matthew Hicks. He then won a closely contested bout by a 3-2 score over the No. 2 seed, Anthony White of Clarion. He took runner-up honors after falling 12-2 to top seeded Torsten Gillespie of Edinboro.
Jose Matos (Williamstown, N.J. / St. Augustine College Preparatory School) finished 3-1 on the day, earning third place. He won is opening match against Kyle Johnson of Kutztown before being sent to the wrestleback bracket by Sean Boylan of Bloomsburg. Matos took third place with a 7-6 victory over Ryan Bohince of Mercyhurst.
Another third place finish was turned in by Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area) in the 165-pound class. He opened the tournament with a 13-0 victory over Ricky Pena of Kutztown before losing to Clarion’s Bekzod Abdurakhmonov. McKendree then pinned Colton Spade of Lock Haven and defeated Pena for the second time to finish third.
Stefan Tighe (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) lost his opening match, but earned two wins in the wrestleback bracket to take fifth place. Tighe earned victories over Justin Grant of Kutztown and Daniel Estricher of Shippensburg.
John Fleming (Bethel Park, Pa. / Lakeview) earned a 4-3 victory over Jordan Toledo of East Stroudsburg en route to a sixth place finish in the 133-pound division.
The Golden Knights will take on Penn State DuBois in their first dual meet of the season on Wednesday, December 8 at 7 p.m.
