Second Half Run Sparks #13 Falcons Win

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The 13th-ranked University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (3-0) continued its strong start to the season as the Falcons downed the University of North Alabama (2-3), 76-60. The Falcons were led by their big men as the three Falcons forwards combined for 39 of the Falcons 76 points. Senior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) had 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three steals and a pair of blocks. Senior Ronald Severtsgaard (East Moline, Ill./United Township) added a double-double with 10 points and 10 blocks while junior DeMarcus Catchings (Arlington, Texas/Arlington) had nine points off 4-of-5 shooting.

Senior Demarcus Richard (Portland, Ore./Jefferson) had 11 points including a pair of three pointers. Junior Miles Beatty (Newark, N.J./St. Anthony's) added nine points in just 18 minutes of action.

Down 7-4 in the opening minutes the Falcons went on an 11-0 run to take a 15-7 lead. The Falcons never trailed from that point on as UNA was only able to tie the game two more times. With 11:46 left in the first the Lions began a 7-0 run that tied the game at 18 but the Falcons responded with five-straight points to retake the lead. Minutes later the Lions tied the game again at 23-all but Richard answered with a well-timed three-pointer to put the Falcons ahead for good. The first half ended with the Falcons ahead 33-29.

The second half remained close for the first 11 minutes but UM took control of the game at the 8:35 mark as the Falcons began a devastating 17-4 run that ended UNA’s chances for a comeback. The Falcons held onto that double-digit lead the rest of the way as the game ended, 76-60.

UNA was led by Marcus Landry who scored 21 points while Beaumont Beasley added 12 and Ricky Davis chipped in 10.

The Falcons out-rebounded the Lions 49-35 while losing the turnover battle 22-19.

The Falcons will return to action tomorrow, Nov. 27 at 6:00 p.m. as they host the University of West Florida as part of the UM Coca-Cola Classic.
