EDMOND (Nov. 26) – Brent Friday scored five of his career-high 21 points in the first minute of the game to put Central Oklahoma in control quickly and the No. 10-ranked Bronchos rolled over Oklahoma Panhandle 91-59 Friday night at Hamilton Field House on the first day of the UCO/Fairfield Inn Invitational.
Unbeaten UCO put five players in double figures and was never threatened in improving to 6-0, making 13 steals while committing a season-low 11 turnovers and limiting the Aggies to 33.3 percent (17-of-51) shooting from the field. The Bronchos return Saturday afternoon to face Missouri Western at 4 p.m. on the final day of the two-day classic.
Friday used his superior quickness to slash to the basket for a number of layups while also hitting his only 3-point try, finishing 9-of-12 from the field in the 21-point outing while adding six rebounds and five assists in just 26 minutes.
D.J. Lemons provided a big spark off the bench, nailing all six of his shots – including four treys – in finishing with 16 points, four rebounds and four assists in only 19 minutes of action. UCO also got 12 points from Shane Carroll and 10 points apiece from June Carter and Carl Curry, with Carter adding eight rebounds and three steals.
Friday drove in for a pair of layups and added a free throw after the second during his opening-minute spurt and Carter also had a layup as the Bronchos sprinted to a 7-0 lead just 60 seconds into the contest.
UCO then missed its next 10 shots, but the Aggies could only get within 7-4 and layups by Tucker Phillips, Carroll and Curry in a 6-1 run quickly upped the lead to 13-5. The advantage reached double figures at 22-10 on a Tyler Phillips 3-pointer with 9:04 left in the half and Lemons’ second trey in a 30-second span made it a 20-point cushion (36-16) at the 3:45 mark.
Curry’s layup at the buzzer off a fast-break assist from Friday following a steal by Tony Ross with three seconds left pushed the lead to 25 (48-23) at the break and the outcome was decided.
OPSU never got closer than 21 in the second half and the lead peaked at 35 before the Aggies hit a late 3-pointer to arrange the final margin.
