The first 20 minutes of play were extremely physical, resulting in a combined 28 personal fouls. Dominican found senior guard Adam Chavis and freshman center Connor Haysbert on the bench less than five minutes into play with two fouls apiece. By the time the half was over 28 fouls were in the books, including four Penguins and five Lumberjacks with at least two personal fouls apiece. Despite the early foul trouble, the Penguins kept things close with good shooting, going 10-of-24 (.417) from the field and 12-of-15 (.800) from the free throw line, to head into the break trailing 40-33.
Dominican opened the second half on an 8-0 run spanning 2:15, capped by Killian Larson's hook shot from Chavis, that put the Penguins ahead 41-40. The Lumberjacks took the lead right back on the next possession. Junior guard Mark Lewis put Dominican back ahead 43-42 on a fast break but that would be the last time the Penguins would see the lead. Senior forward Brian Morris put the Lumberjacks back in front for good at 17:08 on a layup. Midway through the second half, Humboldt State led 58-48 and finished the half with a 17-7 run to secure the 83-61 decision.
Chavis led Dominican with 14 points. He also had four rebounds, an assist, and two blocks. Lewis was the only other Penguin to reach double digits, scoring 10 points. Sophomore guard Ian Collins came off the bench to contribute nine points and led the Penguins with nine rebounds. Freshman Myles Carrillo dished out four assists and pulled down four rebounds in the loss.
Humboldt State junior forward Randy Hunter came off the bench to lead all players with 20 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Morris added 17 points and junior guards Brandon Sperling and Scott clark added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
The Penguins are right back it on Saturday, November 26 when they face host Chico State in the second and final night of the Carl's Jr. Mac Martin Tournament. Tipoff against the Wildcats is slated for 7:30 p.m.
