Prairie Stars Get Third Win in Blowout

SPRINGFIELD – A career-high 18 points from freshman Megan Bergerud and a stellar shooting performance from the Illinois-Springfield women’s basketball team helped in Monday night’s 76-61 victory over Blackburn.

The Prairie Stars (3-1) never trailed in the contest, as they jumped to an early 11 point advantage. UIS would close the first half on an 11-5 run and forced Blackburn (0-5) into six missed shots during the run, while junior Bailey Beale scored eight points during that same span.

Keeping BC close during the first half was its ability to get to the line, as it was 13-of-20, while UIS visited the charity stripe just twice.
Opening the second half, the Beavers went on a 10-4 run got the deficit down to six, but UIS quickly got its lead back over 10.

After letting its double digit lead again slip, the Prairie Stars went on an 11-0 run and never again saw its advantage fall under 15. During UIS’ run, BC missed all four of its shots and also turned the ball over twice.

During the games final seven minutes, UIS outscored the Beavers 17-9, and also converted on 10 of its free throws.

For the game, Beale followed Bergerud with a career-best 17 points, while senior Paulina Pogorzelski and junior Alex Blair added 14 and 12 respectively. Also finishing the game with a career-high was freshman Mallory Beck, who had 10 rebounds to lead the contest.

UIS’ next action is Thursday at GLVC foe Drury for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
