CSC women turn back MSU-Billings, 73-59

CHADRON – The Chadron State College women’s basketball team showed some resiliency to earn their first victory of the season.

The Eagles, now 1-2, trailed Montana State University-Billings 7-0 but stormed back with an 18-0 scoring run and maintained control the remainder of the game en route to their 73-59 non-conference victory Monday night at Armstrong Gymnasium.

The Yellowjackets (2-3) sank three of their first four shots to gain their early 7-0 lead with 18 minutes to play in the first half, but things got frigid after that. MSU-Billings went nearly 11 minutes without scoring and by then the Eagles had a firm grasp on the game, owning a 33-18 halftime advantage.

During the scoreless streak, MSU-Billings missed 12 shots from the field and Chadron State’s defense forced six turnovers.

While the shots were hard to come by for Billings, the Eagles didn’t seem to notice. Chadron State shot 40 percent (13 of 32) from the field in the opening half and hit 22 of 55 for the game.

The Eagles also did damage from the foul line, hitting 25 of 33 attempts, while limiting Billings to 15 of 18.

For the game, Billings hit 19 of 64 from the field (29.7 percent) and just six of 24 from beyond the arc.

Ten of the 11 players who got on the court for Chadron State scored and the Eagles outrebounded the taller Billings’ squad 45-41.

Kaitlin Petri paced CSC with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and added two blocks and two steals. Kada Williams scored 13 points and hit all nine of her free throw attempts, and Kattie Ranta added nine points off the bench.

Also for CSC, Kelsey Scott and Lexi Smidt both scored eight, Betsy Moler added seven and Sadie Waugh chipped in six.

Beata Bak led Billings with 22 points and Kayla Ryan had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Eagles will host two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Western Division foes this weekend when they square off against Mesa State and Western on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both games tip-off at 6 p.m.
