SPRINGFIELD – The new season of Illinois-Springfield women’s basketball gets under way Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. The Prairie Stars take on cross town foe Robert Morris, which lost to UIS a season ago 78-58.
UIS is coming off of a 3-24 campaign in 2009-10 and was led in scoring and rebounding by Paulina Pogorzelski, who averaged 14.1 points and eight rebounds. Also returning for the Prairie Stars is fellow senior Emmaire Snyder and junior Alex Blair.
Snyder, who along with Pogorzelski were the only two Prairie Stars that started all 27 contests, while Blair was the teams third leading scorer at 9.1 points, while adding 5.6 rebounds per contest.
In the exhibition games for UIS this fall, Pogorzelski averaged 9.5 points per contest, while a pair of newcomers junior Bailey Beale and freshman Alyssa Palmer were near the top in scoring. Beale followed Pogorzelski with 7.5 points and Palmer was just a point behind at 6.5.
For Robert Morris it comes into Thursday’s game unbeaten at 4-0 after defeating Blackburn Tuesday 61-45.
Thursday’s action will be the Prairie Stars lone home game until after Thanksgiving when they play host to Blackburn, Tuesday, November 29. However, before then UIS will be on the road at Lincoln (Mo.) (Nov. 20) and St. Ambrose (Nov. 23).
