Peacocks Defeat Golden Eagles 3-1 on Parent’s Night

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball hosted the Upper Iowa Peacocks tonight on Parent’s Night in Lysaker Gymnasium. UMC took the first set but fell in the final three to take the tough loss 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 24-26, 20-25).
 
The Golden Eagles opened the first set striking at a .267 (12K-4E-30TA) attack percentage and holding UIU to a modest .147 (14K-9E-34TA) attack percentage. The score was tied five times but UMC never relinquished the lead in the 25-20 victory. Attack errors cost both teams in set two and three and allowed the Peacocks to sneak out two set victories. Upper Iowa rallied in the fourth set and hit at a .303 (14K-4E-33TA) clip but UMC continued to battle to eight tie scores and four lead changes before UIU took the fourth and final set 25-20.
 
The sophomore and freshman duo of Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, So, Rochester, Mich.) and Alexandra Skeeter (OH, 5-10, Fr., Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Golden Eagle offense tonight. Both players finished with nine kills while Skeeter finished with a .250 (9K-3E-24TA) attack percentage and a career-high 14 defensive digs. Katie Miedtke (MH, 5-10, Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) led Minnesota, Crookston with a .308 (7K-3E-13TA) attack percentage while Alyssa Schneider (MH, 6-0, Fr., Racine, Wis.) led all players at the net with one solo block and a season-high five block assists. The setter combination of Shannon Cologna (S, 5-8, Sr, Peoria, Ariz.) and Kelsey Matykowski (S, 5-7, So., Sun Prairie, Wis.) tallied 35 total assists with Cologna picking up 22 and Matykowski adding 13. The Golden Eagle defense tied a season-high with 16 team block assists.
 
Upper Iowa was paced by Nicky Brown and Kayla Wagner who had 13 kills each. Wagner finished with a solid .423 (13K-2E-26TA) attack percentage. The UIU setter, Skylar Lesan finished with a match-high 40 assists and added six kills. Libero Danielle Gernes finished tonight’s match leading all defenders with 15 digs.
 
The Golden Eagles are 0-27 overall and 0-19 in NSIC play. Upper Iowa improves to 9-19 overall and 6-13 in NSIC play. UMC returns to the court tomorrow, Saturday, November 13 to close out the 2010 season on Senior Day. Minnesota, Crookston will host Winona State University at 2 p.m.
