Patriots face Falcons at PBC Volleyball Tournament

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University volleyball team will face second-seeded University of Montevallo in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament, Friday afternoon (Nov. 12) at 2 p.m.

The tournament is being hosted on the campus of Armstrong Atlantic State University in both the school’s Alumni Arena and the Aquatics and Recreation Center.  Admission is $5 per session for adults, $3 per session for children and senior citizens, and students from PBC institutions are admitted free with a valid ID card.
The 15-15 Patriots will face the 22-11 Falcons in the opening match in the Aquatics and Recreation Center.

Francis Marion owns an all-time mark of 21-20 in Peach Belt Tournament play, including winning the 1997, 1998, and 2005 titles and reaching the championship match on three other occasions.

The Patriots hope to regain the services of freshman setter Nicole Bennett, who has missed the last four matches with an ankle injury.  The Round Hill, Va., native leads the PBC in service aces per set and is second in assists per set.

Senior middle blocker Mallory Eggert leads FMU with a .269 attack percentage and is ninth on the PBC career list for blocks with 412.  Senior libero Kelsie Deaton currently leads the conference at 5.26 digs per set and is fourth on the all-time conference list with 1,863 digs. Freshman Riley Forester paces the Patriots with 2.67 kills per set.

The tournament is a single-elimination format.   The winners of Friday’s four quarterfinal matches will advance to the semifinals in the ARC on Saturday at 4 and 6 p.m., with the championship match set for Sunday in the ARC at 2 p.m.
