COLUMBUS – The eleventh ranked Columbus State rifle team outshot No. 16 Memphis Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit 4618-4596. It is the third team in the Top 20 CSU has defeated this year in head-to-head scoring while also topping four ranked teams in the Ole Miss Invitational.
CSU won both the air rifle (2333-2325) and the smallbore competition (2285-2271) claiming three of the top four spots in the air rifle, while commanding the top three places in the smallbore. Jonathan Hall and April Dunn paced Columbus State with a 589 in air rifle while Phillip Huckaby was not far behind with a 584.
Memphis placed the next four shooters, all within four points of each other. Kaitlynn Lee led the way with a 583 followed by Dan Hermsmeier (582), Kelly Audel (581) and Jessica Phenis (579). A quartet of Cougars finished within three points of each other in the next four places with Juli Yoder rounding out the team scoring with a 571. Jennifer Rodgers (573), David Hall (571) and Jacob Brown (570) were in the bunch while Courtney Duncan shot a 558.
J. Hall again led the Cougars with a 580 in the smallbore followed by Phillip Huckaby with a 577. Dunn (570) finished fourth overall in the event while D. Hall (558) rounded out the team scoring for CSU. Rodgers shot a 553 while Duncan, Yoder and Brown all scored a 551 for the Cougars. Hermsmeier led Memphis with a 577 in the event.
Columbus State will take an extended break before they return to the range when it travels to West Point, NY to take on No. 5 Army on January 8, 2011. The Cougars will turn around a day later to face off against No. 4 Kentucky in West Point.
