THE STARTING FIVE
· The 2010-11 season is all about a fresh start for the Millersville men’s basketball team. After two-straight losing seasons, 13th-year coach Fred Thompson brought in eight new players and added the returning Bernard Brown to five returnees. From 2006-08, Millersville won 50 games. In the last two years, however, the Marauders have won just 18. The 8-19 record last year marked the first time Thompson’s program had ever posted two-straight losing seasons. Millersville has not endured three consecutive losing seasons since a stretch from 1980-83.

· Of the five returning players that played for the Marauders last season, junior Mike Seibert (Columbia/Columbia) is the leading scorer with 9.0 points per game. The 3-point marksman developed into a more all-around scorer at the end of the 2010, and Thompson will look to him for even more production this year. Seibert shot nearly 33 percent from three and over 81 percent from the free throw line. He scored in double figures 12 times last year despite starting only 12 games. He scored in double figures in the final five games of the year and averaged 12.2 points per game over the final nine outings.

· Thompson welcomes the return of 6-6 forward Bernard Brown (Harrisburg/Harrisburg) following a two-year absence from the
program. Brown immediately gives the Marauders a low-post scoring threat and athletic shot blocker that has been lacking. From 2006-08, Brown started 54 games, scored in double figures 30 times and blocked 98 shots (1.5 per game). In 2007-08, he ranked fourth in the PSAC in blocked shots and 10th in rebounds.

· Millersville is hoping it and the Pucillo Posse can regain home court advantage this season. From Thompson’s first year in 1998-99 until 2007-08, the Marauders were an incredible 106-31 (.774) at home and 45-15 (.750) at home against the PSAC East. In the last two years, though, Millersville is 12-15 overall and 5-9 against the league. Even with two down seasons, Thompson is 118-46 (.719) overall at home and 50-24 against the PSAC East (.676).

· A fast start would certainly be helpful for the Marauders, but history shows that it won’t necessarily determine the overall success of a season. Millersville has opened each of the last three seasons by winning its first two games. The last season opening loss came in 2006-07 against Shippensburg. The Marauders went on two win a school-record 28 games. Millersville is just 6-6 in season openers under Fred Thompson. Millersville has been playing hoops since 1899 but only 11 seasons have started with a game against a PSAC opponent and only three have since 1971. MU is 7-4 all-time in such games.
