WORCESTER, Mass.- The Merrimack field hockey team claimed its second win of the weekend with a 3-1 non-conference victory over Assumption Sunday afternoon. The Warriors improved to 8-10 on the year with the win while the Greyhounds remain winless at 0-17.
Merrimack got on the board at 18:29 of the first half. Stephanie Glazier (Sandown, N.H.) notched her second goal of the season on a breakaway, potting the ball off of feeds from Jessica Otis (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Jamie Spano (Reading, Mass.). Spano increased the Warriors’ lead to two-scores just forty seconds later. The sophomore netted her team-leading seventh tally of the year. Sarah Dunbar earned an assist on the play.
Jen Otis (Penacook, N.H.) put the visitors up 3-0 in the second period after 1:37. April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) dished the ball to Otis on a breakaway, who then slotted it into the cage for her seventh goal of the season.
Bethany Rocha got a goal back and cut Assumption’s deficit to two-goals to make the score 3-1. Rocha dribbled the ball in on goal off of a quick restart from a foul and scored her second goal of the year for the Greyhounds.
Merrimack held a 19-7 advantage in shots and a 17-4 edge in shots on goal. The Warriors doubled-up the Greyhounds in penalty corners, 8-4, in the game.
Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) turned in a three-save performance to earn her eighth win of the 2010 campaign. Danielle Luongo made 14 saves for the home team in goal.
“It’s always great to see so many players involved in goals,” said head coach Anne Rounce. “Our midfield line did a great job of utilizing each other’s strengths and playing as a unit.”
The Warriors will look for their third-consecutive win as they host Adelphi in the final contest of the 2010 season.
