ASU To Face Saints; No. 8 Jags to meet regular-season champion Flagler Friday

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State will take on regular-season champion Flagler Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Championships on the campus of Armstrong Atlantic State in Savannah, Ga.

The Jaguars, who posted an 11-21 record during the regular season and 4-10 mark in conference play, learned of their fate Sunday afternoon when the PBC Tournament’s schedule and bracket was officially released by the league office.

Flagler (24-7, 13-1 PBC ) swept a pair of matches against ASU in 2010, winning 3-1 in Augusta on Sept. 24 and blanking the Jags 3-0 on Oct. 15 in St. Augustine, Fla. The Saints will enter the PBC Tourney riding an eight-match winning streak.

The Jags’ matchup with the top-seeded Saints will open the tournament Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ASU finished the season in a tie for seventh place in the league standings with Francis Marion, but lost the tie-breaker with the Patriots because of FMU’s sweep of the Jags during the regular season.

For the first time, the opening day of the tourney will be contested at two venues simultaneously. Alumni Arena will host two matches at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., while two other matches are slated for 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., in the Aquatics and Recreation Center (ARC). The four winners from Friday will play the semifinals in the ARC on Saturday at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., with the championship game on Sunday in the ARC at 2:00 p.m.
