Men's Soccer: DSC 3, Dominican 2

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Five Dominican University of California men's soccer seniors played their final home match at Forest Meadows on Thursday afternoon and it was a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Dixie State College in Pacific West Conference play.

The Penguins (3-10-4/3-7-3) got on the scoreboard first when freshman David Mendez booted sophomore Evan Cordova's throw in at the 28th minute. Dixie State (8-8-1/7-5-1) scored the equalizer in the 35th minute when Tyler Albertson found Nyle Ortiz.

In the second half, Dominican took the lead again in the 47th minute on a déjà vu moment when Cordova connected with Mendez from the throw in. The lead was short-lived though, as the Red Storm's Parker Kennah scored in the 56th minute. Parker teamed up with Ortiz for the game-winner in the 78th minute.

The Penguins outshot the Red Storm 10-6 and were led by Mendez's four shots on goal. The Penguins also had a 7-6 corner kick advantage.

"It's a disappointing result and you always want to win, especially on Senior Day," said Dominican Head Coach Jon Delano. "The time and effort that our seniors — Shane Huiberts, Tim Pinella, Ryan Vella, Derrick Wilkinson, and Alec Ziegler — put into making this program succesful will always be remembered and is truly appreciated."

The Penguins finish the season on the road at Bay Area rival Notre Dame de Namur University. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. at NDNU's campus in Belmont.
