Lewis University - The Flight Plan

Women's volleyball opens up the first round of NCAA tournament after capturing their fourth GLVC title in the last five years, women's basketball hosts Wayne State, men's basketball hits the road for a pair of in-region contests, swimming hosts Truman State and cross country participates in the NCAA Midwest Regional; in Lewis University Athletics.

Women's Volleyball: The No. 11 women's volleyball captured their fourth GLVC Tournament title over the weekend in the last five years defeating Indianapolis in the championship match, 3-1. Sophomore Carly Perschnick hit .500 with 19 kills while setter Rachel Ruedi recorded a career-high 59 assists to lead Lewis. The Flyers defeated Drury, 3-0 on Friday and Missouri-St. Louis, 3-1 on Saturday to advance to the title match. Lewis' eighth tournament championship leads all active GLVC members. The Flyers will head to Hillsdale, Mich. on Friday to square off with Missouri-St. Louis at 12 PM in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Lewis advanced to the `Sweet 16,' before falling to Indianapolis.

Men's Basketball: The men's basketball team opened up the 2010-11 campaign with a 2-1 record at the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif. over the weekend to finish second. The Flyers defeated Alaska Anchorage, 84-70 on Saturday and Dixie State, 61-51 on Sunday. Lewis fell to UC San Diego 70-59 on Friday evening. Junior point guard Chris McClellan was named to the All-Tournament team leading all Flyers with 41 points in the three contests going 9-of-18 from the 3-point line. Center Marty Strus grabbed 19 rebounds while scoring 36 points. Lewis heads up to Michigan this week to square off with in-region foes Wayne State on Thursday and Ferris State on Saturday.

Women's Basketball: The women's basketball team had three Flyers finish in double figures to lead Lewis to a 70-58 victory over Upper Iowa on Monday in the home opener. Senior Kelly Monaco finished with 16 points while Sam Rinehart chipped in 14 points and Jenny Turpel added 12. The Flyers dropped the season opener to Saginaw Valley State on Friday, falling 75-70. Lewis returns to action on Friday as they host Ferris State for a 5:30 PM tip-off.

Swimming: Over the weekend, the Flyers competed in the Toyota Grand Prix in Minneapolis, Minn. against some of the nation's best swimmers. Freshman Derick Carlson finished 48th of 169 entrants in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:43.49. Senior Kevin Coates finished 10th out of 113 entries in the 500 freestyle on Saturday with a time of 4:32.81. Freshman Sarah Kenis took 23rd in the 200 breaststroke out of 66 competitors in 2:27.04. A total of six Flyers earned NCAA `B' times. The Flyers host Truman State on Friday and Saturday.

Men's Volleyball: The men's volleyball team competed in Las Vegas, Nev., last weekend in their second preseason event, taking third place in the six-team event. The Flyers defeated Grand Canyon, 3-0 and fell to BYU and Long Beach State, 2-1 on Friday evening. On Saturday, Lewis defeated UC San Diego, 2-1 and lost to California Baptist, 2-1.
