Game can be watched online for free

TAKE OFF: The Lewis University women’s basketball team opens the 2010-11 calendar with an exhibition contest at Valparaiso on Saturday at 1:35 p.m. A free webcast of the game is available through www.horizonleaguenetwork.tv. The game can be heard on tape delay through WJOL 1340 AM at 3:15 p.m.

NATIONAL PICTURE: Lewis received two votes in the preseason USA TODAY/ESPN Division II Top 25 women’s basketball poll, released on Wednesday.

PICKED FOR SECOND: Lewis was picked to finish second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference North Division, earning 52 points and two first place votes. UW-Parkside was picked to finish first in the division. The Rangers earned 65 points and 13 first place votes.

SERIES HISTORY VS. VALPO: Lewis leads the all-time series with Valparaiso 11-0. The last regular season meeting between the two schools came on Jan. 20, 1987 when the Flyers defeated the Crusaders 74-67 in Romeoville, Ill.

THE FIRST OF TWO: Lewis plays a second exhibition on Monday at Western Michigan. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. CT.

DI TRANSFERS: The Lewis roster features two Division I transfers in Lory Shaw (UW-Green Bay) and Madeline Kish (Eastern Illinois). Shaw played against Valpo for UW-Green Bay on Jan. 31, 2009. Shaw had a point in five minutes in the Phoenix’ 76-45 victory over Valpo. Kish’s Eastern Illinois Panthers never played Valpo.

IT’S SHAW GOOD: Over the final 11 games last season Lory Shaw averaged 6.9 points and 5.7 rebounds in 17.9 minutes off the bench.

TURPEL NAMED ALL-GLVC: Jenny Turpel was named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference First Team last year. In 2008-09 Turpel earned All-GLVC Second Team accolades.

TURPEL NAMED ALL-MIDWEST REGION: In addition to her All-GLVC honors, Turpel also earned Daktronics All-Midwest Region First Team honors last year. In 2008-09 she earned Second Team accolades.

TURPEL IN WINS & LOSSES: Jenny Turpel’s importance to the Flyers last season may not best be measured in points, as she averaged more points in losses (19.4) than in victories (16.5). An efficient Turpel is when Lewis was playing their best basketball. In victories Turpel shot 53.8 percent from the floor compared to 48.9 percent in losses. In victories she shot better from the free throw line (77.0 percent to 69.2 percent) and grabbed more rebounds (8.7 to 7.6).

JT’s SEASON POINTS: Jenny Turpel scored 530 points last season, her second consecutive 500-point season. Only 13 times in school history has a player scored 500 points in a season.

JT’s CAREER POINTS: Jenny Turpel’s 1,359 career points ranks 7th all-time in Lewis history. Another 500-point season would put her 2nd all-time in Lewis history. First up though is 6th place Marry Niegro, who totaled 1,563 from 1980-83.

JT ON THE BOARDS: Jenny Turpel has increased her rebounds per game from 4.6 as a freshman to 6.9 as a sophomore and to 8.2 last year. Additionally, her 567 career total is just six rebounds behind Julie Giles’ (1990-94) 573 for 10th all-time in Lewis history.
