Kyle Allen, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, posted 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Nick Frazier recorded 18 points and Keenan Prince added 11 points.
Blair Wheadon led Western Oregon with 17 points on 6-15 shooting.
HPU, leading for most of the game, needed to withstand a late rally by the host Wolves. The Sea Warriors led 67-60 with 51 seconds remaining, but after a three-pointer by Jamaal Veal, Western Oregon had cut the lead to 67-65 with 36 seconds to play. A pair of free throws each by LaBrent Chappell (2 pts) and Adrian den Dulk (6 pts, 8 reb) sealed the win down the stretch.
HPU led 41-30 at halftime. Kyle Allen scored six straight points early in the first half to give HPU a 16-10 lead, then added another basket with 4:51 remaining to push HPU’s lead to 31-23.
HPU returns home after opening the season with three road games. The Sea Warriors next play Carlton College on Friday, November 26. Start time is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
