BYU-Hawaii women’s XC team earns historic berth; HPU’s Frida Aspnaes takes 12th, earns All-Region honors

BELLINGHAM, WA – The BYU-Hawaii women’s cross country team will continue its season into December for the first time in school history when the Seasiders head for Louisville, KY, to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship.

The Seasiders earned the national berth after finishing sixth at the NCAA II West Regional hosted by Western Washington in Bellingham on Saturday, Nov. 20, in three inches of snow.

BYU-Hawaii took sixth place – the final qualifying slot for team’s hoping to run at nationals – after recording a team score of 213. The Seasiders were just two points behind Western Oregon for fifth place.

Junior Lacey (Johnson) Krout (Preston, ID/Preston) finished 23rd overall and first among the Seasiders with a time of 23:54 on the snowy 6K course, while junior Katherine Buxton (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) placed 38th with a mark of 24:19. Freshman Chanda Romney (Forks, WA/Port Angeles) wound up 44th in 24:24.

Sophomore Lacee Kurtz (Milford, OH/Milford) finished 52nd overall and fourth among the Seasiders with a time of 24:40, while sophomore Amanda Wilson (Clayton, WA/Riverside) claimed 56th in 24:43 to round out the team scoring.

In women’s cross country, the top six teams at the West Regional qualify for the NCAA II National Championship race, while the top two individual runners not on a qualifying team also earn a chance to compete against the nation’s best.

Hawai‘i Pacific junior Frida Aspnaes (Norrkoping, Sweden) – the PacWest Runner and Newcomer of the Year – just missed joining the BYU-Hawaii team in Kentucky after she placed 12th overall and third among individuals on non-qualifying teams. The top competitor from the Pacific West Conference posted a time of 23:26.5 and was the lone PacWest runner to earn All-Region accolades for finishing in the Top 15.

Alaska-Anchorage captured the team title with 40 points, followed by Chico State (55), Western Washington (111), Cal Poly Pomona (185) and Western Oregon (211). The National Championship race will begin at 11 am EST on Dec. 4.
