Head Coach Don Sherman Earns 100th Career Win as Gannon Men's Water Polo Splits on Saturday

ANAPOLIS, Md. - In his eighth season as the Gannon men’s water polo head coach, Don Sherman recorded his 100th career victory in a 19-10 victory over Penn State Behrend at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championships. Gannon lost earlier in the day to Princeton by a 13-4 score.

Sherman, who also serves as the head coach of the women’s team, has finished with a winning record every year with the exception of the program’s first year as a varsity squad. Sherman’s career record now stands at 100-83.

In the opening game on Saturday, Gannon took on No. 17 Princeton. The Golden Knights were shut out in the first quarter as the Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Princeton would gradually build the lead, out-scoring Gannon in each quarter.

Gannon managed only four goals, three coming from freshman Gio Martino (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas). Senior Greg Naranjo (Coral Springs, Fla. / Stoneman Douglas) added the other score for Gannon.

Despite Neal Zoellick’s (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) 10 blocks in the match, Gannon fell by the 13-4 score.

Gannon favored better in the next match, defeating Penn State Behrend by a score of 19-10. Gannon led 10-5 at the half before out-scoring the Lions 9-5 in the second half.

Martino led the offensive attack for Gannon, exploding for seven goals. Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki) added three goals while Tommy Nimrod (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) and Naranjo each scored twice. Zoellick added three blocks in the win.

Gannon now sits at 10-9 this season and will play George Washington later tonight at 7 p.m.
