Hatch, Ryan Lead UCSD Past Dixie State, 65-57

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Christian Hatch scored a game-high 20 points and Casey Ryan finished with 16 to lead the UC San Diego men’s basketball team to a 65-57 victory over Dixie State College on the second day of the Disney West Coast Tip Off Classic on Saturday evening at the Anaheim Convention Center.

UCSD improves to 2-0 with its second win in as many days during the opening weekend of the 2010-11 season. The Tritons, who also knocked off Lewis University on Friday, will now look to take home the Disney Classic title with a victory over Alaska Anchorage on Sunday.

Dixie State falls to 1-1 on the young season after defeating UAA on the opening day of the tournament on Friday.

Hatch was a very efficient 8-of-11 from the field, while Ryan finished 5-of-10 and hauled in a game-high nine rebounds. James McCann added 11 points and dished out five assists and Tyler McGrath scored 10 points off the bench.

The Tritons shot 43.5% (20-46) from the field, while limiting the Red Storm to 36% (16-44) on the other end. UCSD also held a 35-27 advantage on the glass.

“We did a really good job defensively tonight,” head coach Chris Carlson said. “We were able to keep some of their key guys in check for the most part and we won the rebounding battle, which is something we need to do each and every night. Our guys played with a lot of poise out there.”

Griffon Jones was the only player to reach double figures for Dixie State, finishing with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Tom Whitehead, Everton Araujo and McKay Massey finished with nine points apiece.

The Tritons jumped out to an early lead for the second day in a row, taking a 14-6 lead after Hatch sank a pair of free throws with 12:44 remaining in the first half.

The Red Storm closed to within 16-14 on a jumper by Jones three minutes later, but four straight free throws from McCann and Hatch pushed the Triton advantage back to four at 20-16. UCSD took an eight-point lead at 28-20 on a Ryan layup with four minutes left in the period and carried the same margin into the locker room at halftime, 36-28.

The Tritons would extend their advantage to 11 on two occasions early in the second period, but the Red Storm used a 9-2 run to close to within four at 46-42 with less than 11 minutes to play.

UCSD led 53-48 with 4:21 remaining when Hatch hit a baseline jumper and McGrath drained his third three of the game moments later to put the Tritons up 58-49 with three and a half minutes left on the clock. UCSD would extend the margin to 64-53 with less than a minute left to put the game away.

The Tritons were 5-of-12 on threes in the game, with McGrath converting 3-of-7 from behind the arc.

Tipoff for Sunday’s matchup with Alaska Anchorage is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Seawolves were scheduled to face Lewis in the final game of the day on Saturday.
