Griffins Open with Owls at Purple Knight Classic

Bridgeport, CT – (11/13/2010) – The Chestnut Hill College men’s basketball team opened the 2010-2011 season with a trip to the University of Bridgeport for the Purple Knight Classic. Unfortunately, Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) outscored the Griffins by ten points in each half en route to a 77-57 victory. Senior guard Brandon Williams (Philadelphia, PA) led the Griffins with 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Chestnut Hill College (0-1) kept the contest in range early behind the hot, three-point shooting of Williams and sophomore guard Jakeen Bogans (Philadelphia, PA). In the first half, the Griffins guards combined to hit 5-of-9 (55.5%) from long range despite SCSU (1-0) building a 38-28 halftime advantage. As play resumed in the second half the Owl lead continued to grow with senior forward Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, CT) headlining a 13-4 run that landed the Owls a 51-32 lead with 14:52 remaining. The Griffins quickly whittled the margin to 12, 51-39, over the next two minutes thanks to a three-pointer and three converted free throws from senior forward Trenton Davidheiser (Pottstown, PA), but the margin would never return to single-digits as the Owls went on to a 77-57 victory.

Williamson totaled 16 points, six rebounds, a steal, and two blocks, but it was the bench play of freshman guard Greg Langston (Stratford, CT) and junior forward Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, CA) that built the Owls 10-point, first-half lead. Langston finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Ramsey led the Owls with 23 points, nine rebounds, and two steals.

Williams was 2-for-3 from three-point range in the opening half, he totaled nine points in the frame and finished the contest 15 points. Bogans was 3-for-6 on his first-half, three-point attempts, but he had trouble finding his touch in the closing period as he finished the contest with just nine points. Junior center Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA) added ten points and nine rebounds to the Griffin effort.

The men’s basketball team returns to action at the Purple Knight Classic at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, November 14, when the challenge Assumption College.
