Frick Earns ESU's Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week

EAST STROUDSBURG – Redshirt junior wrestler Thad Frick has been named East Stroudsburg University’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week for his runner-up finish at last weekend’s ESU Open at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Frick (Nazareth/Nazareth) won his first three matches to reach the final at 165 pounds. He won a 4-3 decision in the first round, had a first-period pin in the quarterfinals and an 11-3 major decision of Kutztown’s Ricky Pena in the semifinals before falling to Penn State’s Dirk Cowburn via a first-period pin in the championship match.

Frick was one of two Warriors to reach the semifinals, along with sophomore Will Weaver at 285 pounds. ESU had four other wrestlers reach the quarterfinals in their weight classes.

Frick is one of ESU’s most experienced wrestlers and entered the season ranked No. 4 at 165 pounds in the Division II Super Region 1 rankings. His career record of 41-24 represents the most victories and the top winning percentage among the team’s seven returning starters.

A former PIAA District 11 champion, two-time regional champion and a state runner-up at Nazareth High School, Frick was fourth at last year’s Wilkes Open at 157 pounds and was sixth at the Super Region 1 Championships.

He has a 4-2 overall record this season, going 3-1 at the ESU Open at 1-1 at the season-opening tri-meet at Rutgers. He has a career dual record of 21-10 and was 12-4 a year ago.

The Warriors will compete at Lock Haven’s Mat Town Open this Saturday before taking on the rest of the conference at the PSAC Championships on Saturday, December 4 at Bloomsburg.
