Drago, Kane, Arcona Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Men’s Soccer Team

EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University placed three student-athletes on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District men’s soccer team, tied for the most in the college division in District II, it was announced Tuesday.

Redshirt senior midfielder Danny Drago (Stroudsburg/Notre Dame) was named to the first team and advances to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Drago was named to the team for the third time in his career, as he was recognized in 2007 and 2008 before missing most of last season with a medical redshirt.

Redshirt senior midfielder Michael Kane (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) and junior back Josh Arcona (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) both earned spots on the second team on the District II college division team, which comprises all Division II and III institutions in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia.

ESU’s three selections are tied with Carnegie Mellon for the most in the district. DeSales, Grove City, Johns Hopkins and Washington & Jefferson are the only schools with two selections. ESU has had 10 student-athletes named to the Academic All-District teams in each of the past three seasons and led the conference in 2007-08 and 2008-09.

Drago joins two PSAC players, Slippery Rock midfielder Anthony Paganie and Bloomsburg forward Bryce Shaffer, on the first team and has a 3.71 grade-point average as a Psychology major at ESU. He is a two-time Daktronics All-America second team selection at back and has 14 goals and seven assists in 86 career games, all starts. He moved to the midfield this season and has four goals and two assists.

Kane has a 3.47 GPA as a Sport Management major and is in his third year as a starter. He also transitioned to the midfield from back, where he was first team All-PSAC East and a third team NSCAA All-Region pick a year ago. Kane has five goals and three assists this season, including game-winning goals in overtime victories against Gannon and Bloomsburg.

Arcona, an Athletic Training major, has a 3.50 GPA and is in his second year as a starter at back. He is one of four players to start all 18 games this season and has three assists. He has helped the Warriors to 23 wins and 15 shutouts over the past two seasons.

The Warriors finished the regular season with a 12-6 record and host Millersville in the semifinals of the PSAC tournament on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

ESU has had seven individuals earn Academic All-District status in men’s soccer, including Toric Robinson, who was an Academic All-American last year.

Drago is the first men’s soccer player to make three Academic All-District teams and one of three student-athletes in school history to achieve the feat. He joins Katie Horst, a Women’s At-Large selection in field hockey from 1997-99, and Kailyn Buckley, who was selected to the women’s soccer All-District team on Tuesday for the third straight season.
