CIAA Football Players of the Week- Week Eleven

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN- Dillon Kestner, Fayetteville State University

Position:  C  Height:  6-2  Weight:  291  Class:  Sr.  Hometown:  Durham, NC
Comments:  On FSU's Senior Day, Kestner anchored an offensive line that amassed 439 total yards, 309 of which came on the ground. It was the third straight game that the Broncos have rushed for more than 300 yards.

RECEIVER- Joseph Jean-Pierre, Virginia Union University

Position:  WR  Height:  6-2  Weight:  215  Class:  JR  Hometown:  Richmond, VA
Comments:  Jean-Pierre became only the third Virginia Union University football player to earn more than 200 yards in receptions when he caught seven passes for 215 yards and a touchdown against Fayetteville State. Jean-Pierre also became the first VUU Panther to collect more than 1,000 yards in reception yardage since Rodney Hounshell in 1991. Jean-Pierre finished the 2010 season with 1,019 receiving yards.

OFFENSIVE BACK- Clifton Budd, Bowie State University

Position:  QB  Height:  5-10  Weight:  185  Class:  Jr.  Hometown:  Silver Spring, MD
Comments:  Budd produced his second best passing yards game, completing 15-of-25 passes for 294 yards and four TD's. The four TD's tied his season-high and also tied the school record for the second time this season. Not only that, Budd set a new school record for passing yards in a season with 1,538. The old season mark of 1,462 was set by Jimmy Whitehead (1999).

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN- Charles Deas, Shaw University

Position:  DL  Height:  6-6  Weight:  3-5  Class:  Jr.  Hometown:  Fort Lauderdale, FL
Comments:  In a game dominated by defense, Deas dominated the defensive line for Shaw on the way to a 10-6 win that puts the Bears in the CIAA Championship game. Deas had nine tackles, including one sack and one tackle for a loss, but also forced a fumble that ended a drive in Shaw territory, and broke up one pass. The Bear defense held the normally potent Saint Augustine's offense to only 219 yards.

LINEBACKER- Chaz Robinson, St. Augustine’s College

Position:  LB  Height:  5-11  Weight:  220  Class:  Fr.  Hometown:  Hampton, VA
Comments:  Robinson had a game-high 17 tackles in 10-6 loss to Shaw.

DEFENSIVE BACK- Gerald Kennedy, Shaw University

Position:  DB  Height:  5-10  Weight:  190  Class:  So  Hometown:  Greensboro, NC
Comments:  With a shot in the CIAA championship game hanging in the balance, Gerald Kennedy made what could be called the play of the game by forcing a SAC fumble in Shaw territory late in the fourth quarter. Down 6-3 at the time, the Bears took the turnover and immediately converted it into the touchdown that won the game 10-6. Kennedy's game wasn't just that play - he had eight tackles (five solo), and two tackles for losses. For the game, the Shaw defense held Saint Augustine's to only 219 yards - only 100 of those through the air.

ROOKIE- Kwaheem Smith, Lincoln University (PA)

Position:  CB  Height:  5-10  Weight:  185  Hometown:  Trenton, NJ
Comments:  Kwhaeem Smith recorded a program-record three interceptions versus Elizabeth City State on Saturday, besting two set by several Lions. He also broke up a pass in the end zone while making three tackles. Overall, he had a team- high four interceptions in 2010 despite not being challenged as LU's shut-down defensive back.

SPECIALTY- Billy Wiggins, Elizabeth City State University

Position:  PR/KR/WR  Height:  5-10  Weight:  180  Class:  Jr  Hometown:  Charlotte, NC
Comments:  Wiggins set the tone early in the Vikings’ win over Lincoln on Saturday; taking the games’ opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 30 yards.

COACH- Darrell Asberry, Shaw University
Comments:  Asberry's Bears won their seventh straight game by defeating Saint Augustine's 10-6. The win puts the Bears into the CIAA championship game for the third time in four years - and the third time in Asberry's five years as coach at Shaw. When Shaw's normally high-flying offense couldn't find its wings, Asberry kept his Bears calm and the defense sharp, finally turning a 6-3 deficit late in the fourth quarter to a 10-6 victory.

Other Notables…
Notes of Interest:  Shaw goes undefeated in the CIAA for the first time since the reinstatement of the school’s football program in 2003. The 8-2 Shaw mark ties for the best record during Asberry's tenure. The game is Shaw's fourth straight come-from-behind victory.

* Delano Johnson's two blocked kicks gave him six for the season, tying a BSU record (Robert Zachery - 1990).
