New Haven, CT – Holy Family University and Caldwell College were selected as the preseason favorites, among the league’s 14 head coaches, to win their respective Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Divisions in the upcoming 2010-2011 season. With 12 first-place votes and 96 total points the Tigers earned the top spot in the South Division, while eight, first-place votes and 91 total points positioned the Cougars atop the North Division. Chestnut Hill College received 23 total points to finish seventh in the predicted CACC South Division standings.
Despite an epic upset in the 2009-2010 CACC Championship Game, Holy Family University is expected to return to the top spot in the CACC South Division totaling 12, first-place votes and 96 points. Following a two-point, 45-43, loss to Nyack College in the CACC Championships, the Tigers went on to challenge #2 Franklin Pierce University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II East Regional Championship. The Tigers return seven players including All-CACC First Teamer, senior forward Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, NJ) and All-CACC Third Teamer, junior guard Lauren Peters (Doylestown, PA). The Tigers finished last season at 30-3 overall and 19-0 in the CACC, they open this season at #4 according to the Women’s Division II Bulletin.
Caldwell College returns all five starters including All-CACC First Team selection, senior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England) and CACC Rookie of the Year, sophomore guard Torey Jones (N. Providence, RI). Leedham and Jones led the Cougars to a 15-12 overall record and an 11-8 conference mark. The Cougars garnered eight, first-place votes and 91 total points to top the predicted standings for the CACC North Division.
Rounding out the remainder of the predicted North Division standings; Nyack College received four, first-place votes and 79 total points as the defending CACC Champion. Bloomfield College picked up the two left over first-place votes to total 70 points and finished third. Following the Deacons, Felician College placed fourth with 61 total points, Dominican College was fifth with 49 total points, Post University totaled 25 points for sixth place, and Concordia College ranked seventh with 17 points.
Goldey-Beacom College finished as the predicted runner-up in the South Division with two, first-place votes and 80 total points. The Lady Rams of Philadelphia University were next with 76 total points and they were trailed by Wilmington University who finished fourth with 49 total points. The University of the Sciences earned fifth place with 37 points, Georgian Court University took sixth with 31 total points and Chestnut Hill College was slotted seventh with 23 total points.
Chestnut Hill College finished the 2009-2010 season with a 5-22 overall record and 4-15 standing in the CACC, remaining undefeated against Felician College and Post University. Freshman forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) led the Griffins in scoring (10.7 points-per-game) and rebounding (5.5 rebounds-per-game). Along with senior captains, guard Jessica Pruiti (Old Bridge, NJ) and center Ceclia Herald (Gaithersburg, MD), Alexander is charged with directing the Griffins through their 2010-2011 schedule. Alexander was a two-time CACC Rookie of the Week with her top performance coming West Chester University on December 5 (24 points, nine rebounds, a block, and a steal).
The women’s basketball team opens the season on Monday, November 15, when they host Washington Adventist University in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
