SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba never trailed in grabbing a 79-45 win over visiting Lees-McRae in women’s basketball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym in the Comfort Suites Classic. Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) produced a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the Catawba Indians improve to 3-3. The Bobcats fall to 0-3.
Hicks had a layup and a three-point play to open the scoring and after Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) sank a three-pointer the Lady Indians led 8-0. A steal and layup by Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) upped the margin to 23-3 at the mid-point of the opening half. Hicks gave Catawba its largest lead of the half at 35-9 on a pair of free throws at the 2:57 mark.
Catawba increased its lead to 50-20 on a three-pointer by Ivanovic with 14:04 remaining and the Lady Indians ran cruised to the win. Catawba dominated the boards with a 53-30 advantage and scored 26 points off 22 offensive boards. The Lady Indians also picked up 29 points off 24 Bobcat turnovers.
It marked the fifth straight double-double for Hicks, while Ivanovic just missed, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds. Long, Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) and Courtney Mull (Sanford, NC/Fayetteville Christian) each added 10 points in the victory.
Megan Tate (High Point, NC) paced Lees McRae with 11 points. Chloe Parker (Chicago, IL) and Natalija Cakerevic (Belgrade, SERBIA) each tallied six points. Parker pulled down eight rebounds.
Catawba shot 45% in the win and hit on 56% in the second half. The Bobcats hit on just 31% of their shot attempts and missed on all 12 three-point tries.
Barton prevailed over Brevard 82-71 in the opener. The Bulldogs led for the final 31 minutes, but held off a Brevard rally that pulled the Tornados within six with three minutes to play. Barton improved to 4-0, while the Tornados fell to 2-4.
Jamila Johnson scored 27 points and had seven rebounds for Barton. Micheala Watkins had 24 points and four steals for Brevard. Brevard shot 52% in the loss to just 36% for Barton, but the Tornados 30 turnovers were twice that of the Bulldogs.
