BOCA RATON, Fla. – With the season opener in the books, Lynn University’s women’s basketball team can now turn its attention to its busiest stretch of the year. The Fighting Knights (0-1) host Florida Memorial on Tuesday before taking part in the Chic-Fil-A Tip-Off Classic where they will square off against Clayton State and North Georiga on Friday and Saturday.
Despite the loss, Lynn’s defense was on full display in its opener, forcing 20 turnovers, notched 12 steals, blocked three shots and forced Northern Kentucky to shoot a mere 34.5% from the floor. Quanisha Dixon led all players with four swipes but Marquis Lee and Chelsea Patterson logged three steals apiece. Tashina Bailey also flashed some skills in her first career start, blocking three shots.
Playing the first of two games this year against Florida Memorial (1-2), LU will try to improve upon its 21-2 all-time record versus the Lions. Lynn has won five straight against FMU, with its last loss coming December 16, 2001. Sundanne Steward paces the Lions’ offense with 15.3 points per game while Daniella Howard is a double-double threat at 11.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest.
Clayton State (2-0) opened its season with a pair of double-digit victories and now looks forward to its first ever meeting against Lynn. The Lakers have reached the NCAA tournament six consecutive years while their string of three consecutive trips to the Round of 16 was snapped last year. Offensively, CSU has three players scoring in double-figures led by Tanisha Woodard and her 18.5 ppg.
Participating in its second classic in as many weeks, North Georgia (1-1) will be playing Lynn for the first time since 2007. In that game, the Saints pulled out a 93-75 victory in their only game against the Knights. Janyce Ealey has come off the bench in both games but leads NGCSU in scoring at 13.5 ppg while Jessica Howard is averaging 11 boards.
Tuesday’s game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday’s games are slated for 4 p.m. starts. Fans can follow all of the action live by logging on to www.LynnFightingKnights.com and selecting “Game Central.” In addition, Saturday’s match-up can be watched live at www.Saintssports.com.
