Albany State Golden Rams host playoff game, tickets to go on sale Friday

Albany State University football fans will get another chance to see their favorite team in home action, as the No. 1 Golden Rams will host a second-round NCAA Division II Football Championship playoff game on Saturday, Nov. 27. The NCAA Division II Football Committee announced Sunday afternoon the field of 24 teams chosen to participate in the championship series. The Super Regional Two playoff bracket features three teams from the Gulf South Conference, two teams from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and one team from the South Atlantic Conference.
          
Ranked number one in the Super Regional Two, the Golden Rams (10-0) received a first-round bye and will host the winner of the first-round game between the No. 4 Wingate University Bulldogs (8-2) and the No. 5 Morehouse College Maroon Tigers (8-2) on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Albany State University Coliseum in Albany, Ga. Tickets for the playoff game are $15 for adults and $5 for kindergarten through 12th grade students and ASU and opponent team students with a valid ID. Quarterback Club seats are $35.00.
          
Tickets will go on sale Friday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. at the ASU Business Office Cashier’s Window in the ACAD Building, Odyssey Records, June Bug’s Grocery Store and the Radium Springs Petro Store. Fans may purchase tickets on campus until Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 4 p.m.
          
Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets early for the playoff game, ASU Athletics Director Richard Williams said.
          
“We are very excited about the opportunity to host the second-round game and play before our home crowd,” said Dr. Richard H. Williams, ASU athletics director. “Whether it’s Morehouse or Wingate, we anticipate a great game between two great teams and we are expecting a large crowd to come and support the Golden Rams.”
          
The Maroon Tigers and Bulldogs, who will play Saturday, Nov. 20, at 12 p.m. at Irwin Belk Stadium in Wingate, N.C., make their first appearance in the playoffs. The Nov. 20 game is the first meeting of the two teams.
          
In the other Super Regional Two first-round game, the No. 6 University of North Alabama (8-3) will travel to Valdosta, Ga. to take on the No. 3 Valdosta State University Blazers (8-2) on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The winner will face No. 2 Delta State University Statesmen (8-3) on Nov. 27 in the second-round game at Parker Field-McCool Stadium in Cleveland, Miss.
          
If the Golden Rams continue to win, Albany State could possibly host the Division II quarterfinals on Dec. 4 and the semifinals on Dec. 11 or 12.
          
The 25th Division II National Championship Game, which is hosted by the University of North Alabama and the Shoals National Championship Committee, is set for Saturday, Dec. 18, at Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence, Ala. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 HD/ESPN3.com. The 2010 championship marks the 25th consecutive year that the Division II championship game has been played in Florence.
