2010 GSC Football Players of the Week, 11/07/10

HU’S GELLES, VSU’S DREILING AND HSU’S DAVIS NAMED GSC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Harding running back Kale Gelles (JR, 5-11, 200, Colleyville, TX), Valdosta State strong safety Harrison Drieling (JR, 6-0, 190, Augusta, KS) and Henderson State kick returner Darius Davis (FR, 6-0, 180, Frisco, TX) are the Gulf South Conference Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for the period ending November 6th.

Gelles is HU’s first offensive honoree since 2008, leading the Bisons to a 42-7 Homecoming victory over in-state rival Arkansas Tech.  The junior racked up 257 yards on 20 carries for a 12.9 average, while also posting four touchdowns highlighted by an 81-yarder.  The Colleyville, TX native ran for the most yards in a game by a GSC player since 2007, and his four-TD effort was the most since 2008.  The league’s leading rusher scampered for the second-highest performance in Harding history.

Drieling is the third different VSU defensive winner this year, leading the Blazers’ defense in a 31-13 home victory over in-state rival West Georgia.  On the ground, the junior racked up a career and game-high 13 total tackles, led by four solo stops.  He also made an impact in pass coverage, grabbing two interceptions and also breaking up another pass.  The Augusta, KS native’s first interception came at Valdosta State’s six-yard line and he returned his second pick to the UWG eight-yard line.

Davis is HSU’s second special teams honoree in three weeks, recording a season-best effort in the Reddies’ 37-31 loss at Division I-FCS South Alabama.  The freshman wide out returned five kickoffs for GSC season-high 186 yards, including a 93-yard return for a TD.  The Frisco, TX native’s scoring return was the first by a HSU player since 2000 and gave the visitors a 14-10 edge in the first quarter.
