After scoring 90 points on 60% shooting in Friday's win over Western New Mexico, the Triton offense was firing on all cylinders again on Saturday, as UCSD (2-5) reached the 90-point plateau for the second consecutive game and finished at 53% from the field.
A season-high six players reached double figures for the Tritons, with Emily Osga, Daisy Feder and Elaina White leading the way with 15 points apiece. UCSD held a 14-point halftime lead and then outscored NDNU (1-4) 51-25 in the second to post its biggest victory since December of last season.
"I really think the pace that we were forcing the game to be played at was a little faster than (NDNU) wanted it to be," head coach Charity Elliott said. "We wanted to push, push, push and hopefully wear them out a little bit and then be able to push that lead a little more."
After losing five straight to open the season, the Tritons have bounced back in big way, winning their last two games by an average of 37.5 points.
Osga had another great all-around performance for UCSD, finishing 6-of-12 from the field and 2-of-5 from the three-point line. She added seven rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes of work. White finished 5-of-6 from the floor and hit all three of her three-point attempts, while Feder was 6-of-11 overall and 3-of-6 from downtown.
Chelsea Carlisle was named the Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team MVP after finishing with 12 points, four rebounds and nine assists, while Lauren Freidenberg also earned a spot on the all-tournament squad with 10 points and seven boards and Erin Grady added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
All told, nine of the 11 Tritons that played in the game got in the scoring column.
Laura Zasly scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Argonauts, who shot 41% (22-54) for the game. Twin sister Katie finished with 11 points, while Emily Vore chipped in with 10.
Laura Zasly's jumper tied the game at 16 with 11:45 to play in the opening half, but UCSD followed with a 15-2 run over the next five minutes to open up a 31-18 advantage. Five straight points by White gave the Tritons their biggest lead of the half at 41-24 with three minutes remaining and UCSD maintained a 43-29 at the break.
NDNU shot 50% (14-28) in the period, but UCSD was plus-12 from the three-point arc and forced 12 Argonaut turnovers leading to 12 points on the other end.
The visitors closed to within seven (45-38) on a Katie Zasly layup three minutes into the second half, but it was all UCSD from that point forward as the Tritons outscored the Argonauts 23-5 over the next seven minutes to lead 68-43 with 10:49 remaining. UCSD scored 13 unanswered at one point to push the margin to 35 at 81-46 and eventually took its biggest lead at 93-51 with 1:31 left to play.
The Tritons dropped 19-of-33 shots in the second half, 58%, and converted 36-of-68 attempts for the game. UCSD finished with 28 assists on their 36 field goals.
"I really felt like our passing and our distributing and finding open shooters was the best I've seen in a while," Elliott added. "We just did a great job of getting our teammates open shots."
UCSD will look to carry the momentum from this weekend's tournament into next Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Cal State Monterey Bay. The Tritons and Otters will square off at 5:30 p.m. at the Kelp Bed in Seaside.
