Three Pointers, Free Throws Hurt Dominican in Loss to Chico State

CHICO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men’s basketball team never found its stride on Saturday night, dropping a 71-52 decision to Chico State at Acker Gymnasium in the final game of the Carl’s Jr. Mac Martin Tournament.

The Penguins (0-4) scored the game’s opening bucket when freshman point guard Myles Carrillo found freshman swingman James McKinnon for the easy layup. It was a five-point ballgame with 6:38 to go in the first half when a pair of Zach Graves free throws sparked a 13-0 run by the host Wildcats (4-0) that sent the Penguins limping into halftime trailing 37-22.

Sophomore guard Damario Sims nailed one his five three-pointers at 14:32 in the second half to extend the Chico State advantage to 20. The Penguins pulled to within 11 on an Adam Chavis layup with 8:25 to play but that’s as close as Dominican would come the rest of the way.

Dominican made more field goals than the Wildcats, going 23-of-48 (.479) and outrebounded the Wildcats 33-30. The difference came at the free throw line, where Chico State converted 22-of-28 attempts while Dominican went just 6-of-15.

Sims tied a career-high with 21 points for Chico State en route to Tournament MVP honors. He scored 40 points and made nine three pointers in the span of two games. Sean Park and Roderick Hawkins each made seven foul shots and finished the night with 15 points and 12 points, respectively. Jay Flores pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, dished out six assists, and nailed three-pointers, finishing his night with 11 points.

Chavis led the Penguins with 15 points and also grabbed six rebounds. The senior guard was named to the All-Tournament Team after also scoring 14 points in Friday’s loss to Humboldt State.

Sophomore Killian Larson recorded his first career double-double, scoring 10 points and leading all players with 11 boards. Fellow big man freshman Connor Haysbert added eight points in the loss.

Dominican has a couple of weeks off until its next game on Sunday, December 12, when the Penguins travel to Cal State LA. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
