Knights drop first dual match of season

LAURINBURG, N.C.—A trio of Knights won matches but Belmont Abbey College rallied from four first-period deficits and recorded two pins en route to a 27-9 victory in St. Andrews Presbyterian College’s home opener on Friday evening in Harris Court.

Juniors Greg Pattis (Pinehurst, N.C.) and Justin Hoover (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore Brian Beatson (Virginia Beach, Va.) all won by decision for the Knights.

Pattis, who was honored alongside classmate Joshua Price (Fayetteville, N.C.) before today’s contest as part of Military Appreciation Night, highlighted the evening at 184 pounds. Junior regionally ranked Adam Phillips held a 4-3 lead and had over two minutes of riding time built up heading into the final period and chose to be on the bottom. Pattis held on for the final two minutes to erase the riding time and then was awarded the tying point when Phillips was called for stalling in the final seconds forcing overtime. Pattis rode the momentum with the home crowd cheering and was able to take Phillips down 22 seconds into the extra period for the 6-4 win.

After a pair of losses, Beatson put the Knights on the board at 141. The No. 6 Midwest Region 2 ranked grappler dominated his match against Crusaders transfer Will James. Beatson used two takedowns, a reversal, an escape, and riding time to earn his 8-3 win.

Hoover capped the evening by doubling up Abbey heavyweight Kyle Spar, 10-5. Hoover had a takedown in each period to lead SAPC with three takedowns on the evening.

Senior Greg Todd (Gloucester, Va.), junior Eric Brown (Norfolk, Va.), sophomore Sterling Perry (Hampton, Va.), and sophomore Josh Wensel (Bellefonte, Pa.) all led in their respective matches with first-period takedowns but Belmont Abbey came back each time with wins by decision.

Belmont Abbey built up a 6-0 lead in the first two matches with wins by Shane Summerlin and Graceson Pastirik. Brown held a 4-2 lead heading into the final two minutes but Summerlin rallied with seven points to take the 9-5 decision at lightweight. The 141 pound tilt came down to the wire with the score tied at nine apiece and Perry closing in on the victory with riding time. However, Pastirik was awarded a takedown as the final horn sounded for the 11-10 win.

The Crusaders won a pair of matches by one point as David Saley edged Todd 5-4 at 149 with riding time. Belmont Abbey won four of the first five matches by decision as Appolon Jean-Paul used three third-period takedowns to pull away from SAPC sophomore Richard Manwarren (Middleburg, Fla.), 9-3, late.

Belmont Abbey used a pair of pins in the heavier weights to increase its final margin of victory to 18 points. No. 3 regionally ranked Jake Varilek (165 pounds) record his fall in 2:20 while Nick Rees (197) decked his foe in just 87 seconds.

In a close encounter at 174, Jerami Bartley used a match-high six takedowns to defeat Wensel by a 14-10 score. Wensel held a 6-4 lead after the first period on the strength of a takedown and a near fall.

St. Andrews will only have an overnight rest before hitting the mat again when the Knights host regional foe Tiffin University on Saturday at Noon.
