OAKDALE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-21,27-25,26-24) to the University of Bridgeport in the NCAA Division II East Region semifinals as its 2010 season came to a close. The Chargers season concludes with a 27-3 overall record, while the Purple Knights move on to the East Region championship match.
The Chargers opened the match with the first lead, taking a 10-7 lead early in the opening set. Bridgeport rallied and cut into New Haven's lead and eventually would take the lead off a UNH attack error. The teams then went point-for-point through until the set was tied at 21-21. The Purple Knights then rattled off four unanswered points to take the opening-set victory.
In a set which could have gone either way, New Haven fell behind early in the second. The Purple Knights took an early 10-6 lead and held on to a four-point buffer at 16-12. Tymika Duncan sparked a rally as the Chargers crawled back into the set, cutting Bridgeport's lead to one at 18-17. UB scored the next two points before UNH went on a 3-0 run to tie the set at 20-20. Both teams exchanged points until Bridgeport scored two straight to take a 27-25 extra-point victory.
The third set, which played out much like the second set, opened with an early Bridgeport lead. The Chargers cut into the Purple Knights lead and found the score tied at 15-15 after a 5-0 run. The Purple Knights took control by going on a 7-0 run to take a 22-15 lead. The scoring sprees continued as the Chargers once again went on a 5-0 run to come within two points, 22-20. The Chargers would eventually tie the score a 24-24 off a UB ball handling error, but a kill and a block to close out the set earned Bridgeport their second straight NCAA victory over the Chargers.
New Haven's 27-3 record is the second best in the last eight years, while making the team's fifth straight NCAA tournament appearance. The Chargers also posted it's third consecutive undefeated NE-10 regular season.
