LA JOLLA, Calif. - Roxanne Brunsting finished with 11 kills, 22 assists and nine digs and Katie Condon tallied 10 kills and 14 digs to lead the UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a convincing 3-0 victory over Chico State on Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.
UCSD hit .305 for the match and racked up nine service aces to easily turn away Chico and record its eighth consecutive victory. Set scores were 25-13, 25-19 and 25-19.
The Tritons have now won 10 of their last 11 overall, improving to a season-best eight games over .500 at 15-7. UCSD stands at 12-6 in league play, one game behind Cal State East Bay for second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings.
The Pioneers bounced back to win two straight this weekend after losing a four-set decision to the Tritons on Wednesday in Hayward.
Brunsting finished one dig shy of her sixth triple-double in seven matches, hitting at a .364 clip after finishing with a mark of just .194 in Friday's 3-1 win over Cal State Stanislaus. Condon finished with a hitting percentage of .241.
Triton seniors Audrey Green, Kaitlin Potter, Alanna Rutan and Cara Simonsen were honored prior to the match and all four contributed to the victory. Potter, Rutan and Simonsen combined for 10 kills, while Green finished with a kill, two digs and a block.
Alex Shurtz finished with 11 kills for Chico State (11-13, 6-12 CCAA), while Sable Villaescusa had 28 assists and Jessica Simms tallied 11 digs.
After the Wildcats grabbed an early 4-2 lead in the opening set, the Tritons answered with a crushing 17-1 run to take a commanding 19-5 advantage. Rutan and Julia Freidenberg had two aces apiece during the stretch and Hillary Williamson sent down three kills. Chico State would cut the deficit in half at 20-10, but it was too little, too late as Condon recorded the final kill and UCSD took set one, 25-13.
The visitors held an early lead (7-5) in the set two as well, but the Tritons got back-to-back kills from Condon and an ace from Janessa Werhane to go in front, 8-7. A kill by Potter and a Williamson ace made it 18-12 in favor of UCSD and successful swings by Potter and Condon moments later gave the Tritons a cushion of 21-14. Chico closed to within 23-18 on a Shurtz kill and a Williamson attack error, but Brunsting's kill and a blocking error by the Wildcats' Crystal Trifeletti gave the set to UCSD, 25-19.
The Tritons hit at a .528 clip in the second stanza, connecting on 20 out of 36 swings, with just one error.
UCSD scored the first three points of the third set and led 13-9 following consecutive errors by Shurtz and Jacqueline Johnson. The Wildcats closed to within one at 16-15 on a Trifeletti kill, but the Tritons rattled off the next six points to pull away, 22-15. A Freidenberg kill made it 24-18 and Potter's swing accounted for the final point, as UCSD took the game and the match, 25-19.
The Tritons will now travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. next weekend, before wrapping up the regular season at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino November 12-13.
